the blog!

Welcome to Viva!

Oh hey! Welcome to the blog. I’m Rachel, a licensed therapist, certified health coach, and one half of the team who created Viva Wellness. When I’m not spending my time trying to make the world healthier, you can often find me running around in circles (I’m a runner and I live near Central Park – it’s not as crazy as it sounds), cheering on and cursing at the NY Rangers and NY Yankees, and planning the next time I’m going to eat.

So why Viva Wellness and this blog?

For years I had one of those hypothetical ideas that never really went away. You know, something like “If I won the lottery…” or “If I could quit my job and do anything I wanted…”. Jor-El and I would talk about this plan and just think it would be so great to implement, but I’d be lying if I ever thought of it as an actual possibility. Fast forward to late 2017. I had recently read “The Happiness Project”, and at one point it asks the reader what they would be doing if they could do anything, assuming money wasn’t a factor. Viva Wellness was my answer to that question. I was already unhappy with my full time job, and when I told a friend about the idea, her response was “Why aren’t you doing that?”. I didn’t have a good answer. I told Jor-El it was time and he hopped on board, which he often does when I come to him with crazy (yet amazing) ideas. He’s pretty great that way.

I feel truly passionate about helping people live healthier lives. I do this often with my closest friends and family, whether they like it or not, so I figured it was time I spread the love to a larger audience. I believe that physical health and mental health actually can’t, and shouldn’t, be separated despite the fact that healthcare today desperately tries to do so. I believe that people should receive services in a supportive, empathetic, community environment. Making healthy changes can be hard, and it’s overwhelming. There’s so much information out there, and it’s difficult to make sense of it all and figure out what works for you. I believe that more people would live healthier lifestyles if they felt they capable, and I hope that we can do that for as many people as possible.

  • What happens when you feel like you don't look like the usual gym bodies? You learn to define your own meaning of health and wellness, and that's exactly what @rachelgersten and @jorelcaraballo did.

For Rachel, running after being told that she couldn't meant not only taking control of her own health and wellbeing, but also providing a sense of accomplishment that she had been craving. For Jor-El, it meant incorporating walks, getting active with his dog Nomi and listening to what made him feel good physically.

Head over to our podcast as we discuss our views on wellness and how we got there in the latest podcast episode, Wellness Journeys. You'll hear how @rachelgersten came to refer to a certain fast-food joint as "the yuck place" and how @jorelcaraballo came to define his own meaning of health and wellness after he realized going to the gym to lift weights wasn't quite for him (you can guess that that quote was from him). Don't forget to subscribe so you can be notified of the latest episodes as soon as they come out, and leave us a review! #linkinbio

  • Go on, stop and smell the flowers. Sometimes you need some quiet moments to truly appreciate what's around you.

We all know the great feeling of having a few minutes to yourself, but did you know that it can also boost brain growth and improve your memory? Our friends at @helloworkwell explored some of the benefits of silence, and it's definitely worth taking a bit of time every day to yourself. Bonus points if it's a walk outside in #CentralPark (hello, spring!).

  • As we're trying to adjust to the new daylight hours (thank you, #DaylightSavingTime), @rachelgersten and @jorelcaraballo have a couple tips to make the transition easier: -Make sure to drink plenty of liquids. Avoid alcohol and caffeine starting in the late afternoon to help your body sleep smoothly.
-Try to still go to bed and wake up at the same time, even though the sunrise and sunset times are different.
-More daylight after work and (hopefully) warmer days means it's a great time to walk home a bit from work. Start slowly, especially if you haven't had a serious exercise regimen in the winter. It's a great time to play tourist in your own neighborhood, like @rachelgersten did when snapping this shot in Washington Square Park.
