The Biggest Lie About Mental Health

At Viva Wellness we pride ourselves on being stigma fighters and advocating for a culture and society that prioritizes everyone’s mental health and wellness. This brings me to one of the biggest lies about mental health that I often encounter… Your feelings don’t matter. This is one of the most disruptive lies that has been […]

The Things That Have Stuck

We are a culture that celebrates anniversaries. We love them. I say we, because it’s we, but it’s also me. I love anniversaries. I celebrate the anniversary of my first half marathon (it was LIFE CHANGING!), the opening of Viva Wellness, the day I became a New York City resident – and oh yeah, my […]

How to Support A Survivor of Sexual Assault

Many years ago, before entering the counseling field, I worked with an organization dedicated to preventing sexual assault. We talked to men directly about how to help survivors at sexual assault to help combat rape myth acceptance and help men see themselves as helpers and not just potential perpetrators. Today, I’m sharing with you some […]

You see the #pride flag everywhere but do you know how it came to be?
Flag designer Gilbert Baker created the #pride flag in 1970s San Francisco as a symbol for Harvey Milk, gay activist and politician. Milk wanted a symbol and Baker, a queer man himself, wanted to create something special. He stated, “I thought of the American flag with its thirteen stripes and thirteen stars, the colonies breaking away from England to form the United States,” he wrote. “I thought of the vertical red, white, and blue tricolor from the French Revolution and how both flags owed their beginnings to a riot, a rebellion, or revolution. I thought a gay nation should have a flag too, to proclaim its own idea of power.” And thus the original flag was born!

Today, the most common version of the flag has 6 colors (the original had 8) each with its own meaning: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony and purple for spirit. Recent iterations have also included 1 black and 1 brown stripe to reflect people of color in the movement. That version is not yet widely used as of today.

Pride can be about indulgence, it can be about freedom but it’s also about power, healing and an emboldened spirit to live as one’s self authentically in the environment around you.
However you celebrate (whether that’s by learning queer history or partying it up) know your pride resonates far beyond one day, one month or one parade. There’s power in being you!

  • We wrote before about how to apologize to someone you've hurt. But what happens after the apology? #Ontheblog, @jorelcaraballo explains why an apology is not only about intent and internal feelings but also about observable, consistent change. And sometimes that means swallowing your pride to put the health of the relationship first.

  • And it can make you healthy but not happy. Case in point: ending a relationship that you knew was the best thing to do and would make you healthier in the long run but didn't feel happy at all at the time.

But, as @jorelcaraballo writes in this week's blog post, that's OK. We don’t have to always be chasing the ever-elusive concept of happiness because chances are we may not reach the pinnacle that we have in mind.
