Is it Friday yet?
How many times have you thought that as you’re walking through the door at the start of another day on the job?
Sadly, a good number of people dread going to work everyday. Depending on where you look, anywhere from forty to a whopping eighty five percent of people report hating their job. Yikes! Nearly 1/3 of our lives are spent at work, so that’s a lot of people who are unhappy for a good portion of the day. Are you one of them? Career coaching can help.
What is career coaching?
Good question. Similar to traditional therapy, a career coach will help you work through and process your feelings and what’s been going on in your life, but the focus will be specifically about work. You’ll talk about what you like about your job/career, what you don’t like, and what you wish you could change.
If you’re unsatisfied overall and think you want to work in an entirely different field, you’ll work with your career coach to figure out what you’re passionate about and the best, as well as most realistic, ways to turn that into a paying job. A career coach will also help you work through all of those complicated and messy logistics of actually making that career or job switch, and support you throughout your entire journey. It’s pretty awesome to have someone in your corner when you’re making a big life change like that!
Deciding to do something different
People are often reluctant to change careers. It’s a big decision, one that can feel like you’ve failed. Often you’ve spent years (and a lot of money) in school, and now you’re just going to give it up? Who does that? There must be something wrong with you, right? Nothing could be further from the truth.
Think of how much you’ve changed as a person since you were in your late teens and early twenties, when your initial career decision was probably made. You’ve grown as a person and experiences have changed you. Your priorities and world views might be different than they were when you were younger. You made a huge life decision in choosing your career, with less life experience than you have now. If so many other things changed, doesn’t it make sense that what makes you happy at work might have changed also? It’s crazy to think that at 20 years old, you’re going to know with absolute certainty what you’ll want at 40, 50, or even 30 years old.
Life happens, and our experiences make us different people than we were before. Career coaching can help you take the first step towards doing something you’ll truly love, and it’s 100% okay if that’s a different something than it used to be.
Whether you’re looking to change careers, need a different environment, or aren’t quite sure what you want – there’s no reason to waste another minute stuck in a job that’s sucking the life out of you. You deserve to spend your time at a job that you truly enjoy. It’s never easy, but you can absolutely do it. It might take time, but that time will pass anyway. Would you rather the time pass at a job you hate, or working towards a better future?
